I can't decide which character I identify most with.
On one hand, I respect Melquiades' seemingly unending knowledge of the world.
But on the other, I can TOTALLY understand Pilar's morals and way of life.
Which should I do?

Naida,

Ursula is a great candidate for you to explore issues of family or morality. She is the domestic goddess, complete with her own business who works hard to keep the family together.

Think about this and it might help you.

Ashley,

Both of these characters are wonderful choices to explore an array of themes in the novel. I think you should choose whichever character you feel most comfortable analyzing.

hello.

ok, so lets rewind a bit.
i went and re-read chp7.
& i am confused.

if Amaranta is passionate for Marquez then y did she deny her love and when he asked her to marry him, she said " im not going to marry anyone" " much less you" " you love Aureliano so much that you want to marry me because you cant marry him"
??
umm hello. is she being sarcastic?
because Marquez isnt gay.
first she says no to Pietro Crespi,
that i understand why, but i dont know why she does it to Marquez.

I think she is afraid to express love. she may be scared to hurt som1, or scared of being hurt.
Thats my guess.
ahh. i dont know.

& sorry for writing a lot.

Sanda,

You pose some interesting questions that need to be looked at further. Now, there are many ways to interpret Amaranta's choice not to marry anyone. Perhaps she is not good at expressing her love; that is one idea to explore.

And, I agree, Marquez probably isn't gay, but he does have a certain admiration for Aureliano and the war, so could it be that she knows she will always come second to his passion for the war?

Amaranta is not one who is satisfied by being second; she is a jealous character (see how she reacts to Remedios the Beauty).

Another valid question: Is there anything religious in her celibacy? Is she punishing herself for something or paying penance?

Remember, in interpretation there can be many right answers-even if they are conflicting. Explore these ideas and I think it will lead you to an interpretation you are comfortable with.
